Anyone want to buy a watch?
October 14-22, 2006: Just returned from my Swiss Miss experience (aka Switzerland) with a very "un-neutral" feeling. In fact, even a bit confused. Swiss seems to me a land of opposites... strikingly beautiful, calm, clean, diverse, and intriguing on the one side.... and detached, antiseptic, rule bound and oppressively expensive on the other. The people everywhere were very nice and Zurich is always rated one of the world's best cities to live in with lots of restaurants, culture, beautiful surroundings and watches as far as the eye can see... yet somehow there was a strange vibe like "big brother" was watching and noone dares to have too much fun. Hard to articulate....

Hmmm.... Swiss.... I am still curious and the place is far too beautiful to ignore. I will surely give it another try.

Where sausages go to die.... Oktoberfest!
September 28 - October 1, 2006: Do not be lured away by cheap imitations of Miller Light swilling beer fests under the same name in hot spots like South Side or LoDo or the Village. This, my friend, is the real deal... the numero uno.. the big kahuna... the, well you get my point. This is round 3 of the title fight between me and the reining champion Munich and needless to say.. I am 0-2. Seasoned from past battles, I thought I had an excellent game plan for this carnival or carnivals... Oktoberfest. The 3 day plan was simple... 1 warm up night followed by a heroic last stand mono e mono slung fest on Friday and then a day (or many) or rest and post victory celebrations!

The details are to remain in the annals of history but... the obituary reads... "Here lies John, valiant challenger that fought bravely to the last drop but broke himself against the rock that is Oktoberfest!"

Several lessons were learned or relearned (depending on your perspective) this glorious weekend:
1.) Although the magic formula of beer - pretzel - beer - sausage - beer - cheesy bread - repeat can prolong the experience, it cannot prevent the inevitable.
2.) Vodka Red Bull can provide a false sense of invincibility
3.) I am no longer 21 and in prime drinking shape but under pressure... I can have a big game!
4.) Italians cannot drink beer, period.
5.) The best a German woman ever looks is in "lederhosen"
6.) Everyone is your friend at Oktoberfest
7.) OFest is simply GOOD TIMES!

Everyone needs to go at least once... then you will know that what I speaketh is the truth!
Special thanks to the OFest crew which included seasoned vet Donut and rookies Sherrie, Mike, Sammy, and Nick. It was worth the pain!
